Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "How the COVID-19 Pandemic is Shaping Politics in East Asia - An Update," with Yves Tiberghien
Wed, Jan 25, 9:00-10:00 am JST (Tue, Jan 24, 4:00-5:00 pm Pacific)
Following an initial phase of relative control and good performance across East Asia in 2020 and 2021, the Delta and Omicron variants have challenged politics and societies across the regions. The Delta variant played a big role in the downfall of Prime Minister Suga in October 2021, and there is some concern what the winter season will bring next. China has presided over the most dramatic cycle of extreme policy rigidity and control, followed by an abrupt abandonment that unleashed a massive wave in December 2022. What explains these COVID trajectories in East Asia over time, how should we assess changes - extreme or piecemeal - in pandemic policies, and what are long-term implications of these developments?
