January 26 Free Lecture at Lakeland University Japan: Hawaiian Culture and Japan

From: Roger Grabowski <grabowski@japan.lakeland.edu>
Date: 2023/01/19

This lecture (in English) will be held Thursday January 26 at 7:00 at Lakeland University in Ryogoku, Tokyo. It will also be streamed via Zoom.

"How Should we share 'Aloha Spirit'?" presented Anella

For several decades, Japan has supplied more foreign visitors to Hawaii than any other country. Japanese visitors take part in all aspects of Hawaiian culture, ranging from water sports to hula and ukulele, and even the Hawaiian language. In many ways, Hawaii has been "Japanized". However, the internationalization of Hawaii's tourism industry has not all been positive and has certainly created tensions. Furthermore, this love of Hawaiian culture has extended back to Japan, as well, where there are more than 1000 academies of hula and ukulele--about 10 times as many as in Hawaii! This lecture will address issues of preserving Hawaiian culture as well as asking "Why do we love Hawaii so much?" and "How should we share Aloha Spirit?"

Anella is a singer, ukulele player, and winner of Hawaii Music Awards in 2007 and 2015. She is a native of Iwate, Japan and studied at St. Ursula's College in Australia, and at Waseda University. She produces several radio-shows, and owns 3 ukulele academies in Tokyo and teaches at several more. She might even bring her ukulele and favor us with a song.
