Dear SSJ members,
the organizers would like to invite you to an international workshop about Asian lacquer titled:
Past, present and future of Asian lacquer: urushi from art to electronics
The event is organized by an interdisciplinary group at Kyoto University and supported by KURA and CPiER.
This event will bring together experts from various fields working on asian lacquer, from art and archeology to chemistry, electrical engineering and forest policy and economics.
The need for sustainable materials to replace oil-derived ones has renewed the interest toward a traditional resin that has long been used in Asian countries, urushi or Asian lacquer, originating from the sap of Rhus verniciflua (or, more appropriately, Toxicodendron vernicifluum).
Urushi has long been employed as a coating and adhesive material for both practical and aesthetic purposes, but more recently applications in fields such as biomedical and electronics have been proposed and successfully demonstrated.
One of the main limitations regarding research on urushi is linked to the difficult task of collecting the raw sap and the time-consuming preparation of the lacquer, another issue is linked to its difficult analytical characterization once the natural lacquer has polymerized, due to its high degree of cross-linking and insolubility in either organic solvent or acids and bases.

Invited speakers list:
Prof. Shimode Yutaro, Kyoto Sangyo University, urushi art;
Prof. Otani Ikue, Kyoto University, archeology;
Mr. Nishatani Yuuta, Kyoto University, urushi tree physiology;
Prof. Bonaduce Ilaria, University of Pisa, state of the art analytical characterization of urushi;
Prof. Hashimoto Yuki, Tsukuba university, urushi circuit;
Dr. Tamburini Diego, British Museum, urushi characterization and conservation;
Prof. Erokhin Victor, IMEM-CNR and University of Parma, soft biomimetic electronic materials;
The event will take place on December 12th from 15:30 to 18:40 JST on Zoom and onsite (Yoshida campus, Building 61 - Research administration building, room B1)
