Foodways sustain social relations and community livelihoods while facing multiple exogenous stressors. Building on ethnographic fieldwork one Tokyo neighborhood and wine tourism in Yamanashi prefecture, this session investigates the empirical dimensions of social sustainability in Japanese foodways. The papers seek to clarify the relationship of social sustainability to economic and environmental sustainability.

This event is organized by James Farrer (Professor of Sociology, FLA, Sophia University, Leader of ICC Collaborative Research Unit "Global Japanese Cuisine Project: Culinary Mobilities and Urban Place Making") for Sophia Open Research Weeks 2022.
