SOSS Seminar | Migration, Education, and Cultural Capital in the Post-Pandemic World
The COVID-19 pandemic halted educational migration that had been rapidly growing since the 2000s. Although countries around the world are now opening their borders to migrants, the landscape of educational migration seems to have fundamentally changed by tighter border controls, growing geopolitical tensions, accelerating digital connectivity, and other pandemic-related developments counteracting physical mobility. To explore this changing landscape, guest speaker Hiroki Igarashi will first present his ongoing research on Japanese migrant families in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and their educational strategies for accumulating cultural capital for their children across national borders. Then, SMU faculty members Alwyn Lim, Yasmin Ortiga, and Orlando Woods will comment on the guest speaker's presentation to share their multi-disciplinary and international perspectives on the intersection of migration, education, and cultural capital in the post-pandemic world.
