Dear all,

Sunnier days are back in Berlin, and things are opening up; it almost summer. We are looking forward to all the fun stuff we can do in summer and the event on 24th June 2022, where Dr. Andrew Lawrence will be talking about Filming fieldwork. He will discuss various whys and hows of the filming process and the challenges on this path. Important issues such as ethics and distribution of the work on various platforms will also be covered. This conversation will be helpful for anyone who intends to use ethnographic filming techniques for research or other filming projects. If you are in Berlin or planning to visit, join Dr. Megha Wadhwa in conversation with Dr. Andrew Lawrence. And if you are not physically in Berlin, then don't lose heart. We can get you here virtually to join our event.

The event is immediately followed by a FILM SCREENING (in-person only) of a film by Dr. Megha Wadhwa, editorial support by Filmmaking for Fieldwork (f4f). The film "Finding their Niche: Unheard stories of migrant women" is an hour-long film documents the life of two Indian women migrants who moved to Japan more than a decade ago as trailing spouses. They were excited to be with their husbands and had no prior knowledge of the country. Looking into the lives of their relatives settled in the US, UK and Canada, they had similar expectations for their life in Japan. But the reality was different. Through their narratives we look into their past, present and future expectations, and their 'position' as Indian women, wives, mothers and workers in a foreign country, as well as the challenges they faced in'finding their niche'.

So, if you happen to be in Berlin join us for both the events. And if you can't make it this time, then hopefully the film will come to your city in the near future.

Dr. Lawrence is a senior lecturer at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester in the UK, where he is also filmmaker-in-residence. His films about childbirth, death, adolescence, old age, adventure and identity in the UK, India and Peru look at the uncertainty that surrounds momentous and life changing experiences. Currently, Andy is producing Jón Bjarki Magnússon's film Half Elf and co-editing a new book entitled, Empirical Art: Filmmaking for Fieldwork in practice (expected 2024). This follows his recent publication of Filmmaking for fieldwork: a practical handbook (2020) from Manchester University Press.

Looking forward to seeing you in-person or virtually.
