Yokota: An Imperial Japanese Army Base Now at the Center of the US-Japan Alliance
March 3rd, 2022 at 2000 (Japan) / 0600 (D.C.)

YCAPS & the Sasakawa Peace Foundation are pleased to launch the Community Conversations seminar series in Fussa. The inaugural event will feature Dr. Michael Bosack discussing how Yokota Air Base, originally an Imperial Japanese Army facility, emerged as the hub for the US-Japan security relationship. He will explain how the base has reflected the evolution of the broader U.S.-Japan alliance while offering a foundational understanding of the strategically meaningful work being done by American, Japanese, and multinational personnel at Yokota today.

This event will be a webinar. Future Community Conversations events will be held in person so long as health and safety conditions permit.

Michael MacArthur Bosack is the Special Adviser for Government Relations at the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies. Previously, Michael served in the U.S. Air Force as a Foreign Area Officer. His last posting in the Air Force was as the Deputy Chief of Government Relations at Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Japan. Prior to that, Michael was a Mansfield Fellow, where he worked in the National Diet, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Defense. He completed his doctoral studies at the International University of Japan's Graduate School of International Relations. Michael's Ph.D. research examined Alliance Theory and Intergovernmental Negotiations, specifically focusing on the negotiations and outcomes of the 1997 and 2015 Defense Guidelines between the United States and Japan. His other research areas include North Korean Governance and Foreign Policy, Postwar Occupation Policy, and Leadership Studies.

Discussant: Dr. Tomonori Yoshizaki, Director of Policy Simulation, National Institute of Defense Studies. Prof. Yoshizaki is a renowned expert in the areas of alliance management, European security and NATO, Japan's peace operations, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding
