*"Looking at the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état as a Burmese student in Japan"*

On February 1st, 2021, a military junta launched a coup to overthrow the democratically elected government, The situation quickly deteriorated into deadly violence in the streets; as of November 2021, there have been more than 1260 killed and 7251 detained (https://aappb.org/). During this same period, thousands of Burmese exchange students were left stranded around the world, but especially in Asia, looking on with horror both political and personal.

What do you do when you are so far away from home and your country is burning down, as the rest of the world watches?

The feelings are complex, reactions are various, and actions are many. The Burmese community and Burmese students in Japan are diverse with many different perspectives. In our event, we will begin with a short review of the situation by the Sophia Refugee Support Group, and then we will hear two Burmese exchange students talking about their positionality, reaction, and feelings, then, now and into the future.
