The Department for Japanese Law of the FernUniversität in Hagen cordially invites you to a one-and-a-half-day hybrid symposium to commemorate 30 years of Japanese law at the FernUniversität in Hagen. It is organised jointly with the German-Japanese Association of Jurists (DJJV), will take place on 30 September and 1 October 2021, and consists of two parts, for which you can register selectively or in total and either in person or online. We would be delighted to welcome you in person or online.

Representatives from academia and practice will comparatively discuss recent developments in commercial and investment arbitration and mediation, including the establishment of the Japan International Dispute Resolution Center and the settlement of mass tort cases, as well as the digitalisation of ADR in both countries. There will be several opportunities for informal exchanges both online and offline, including a networking event for young professionals in Japanese law, during a bentô lunch reception and a walk in the garden.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the number of participants on site is limited. Therefore, there is also the possibility to participate online. In any case, registration is necessary. Background: The Department of Japanese Law in Hagen was established in 1989 as a research and teaching unit within the Faculty of Law in order to provide students access to the Japanese legal system in German. At the time, this was one of - if not the - first university programme to award a dedicated university degree in Japanese law outside of Japan. Jun.-Prof. Weitzdörfer has recently succeeded the Department's founder, Prof. Hans-Peter Marutschke.

Thank you for your attention.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Anna Suzuki-Klasen
Prof. Dr. Julius Weitzdörfer
