DESCRIPTION

In this presentation I will talk about my work since 1996 building boats with nine craftspeople from throughout Japan, all in their seventies and eighties, documenting their design secrets and techniques. I am the sole apprentice for seven of my nine teachers. In my view this work is crucial as Japan's last generation of traditional boatbuilders has almost disappeared. Like many Japanese crafts boatbuilding was steeped in secrecy and craftspeople left almost not documentary record of their work.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Douglas Brooks is a boatbuilder, writer, and independent researcher. He has published five books on Japanese boatbuilding, two book chapters and numerous articles, and has taught Japanese boatbuilding at several colleges and boatbuilding schools. He has built Japanese boats for museums in Japan and the US.
