Traditional Japanese architecture and design emerged from a combination of sophisticated environmental sensibility, scarcity of resources, and ethical values built over centuries. This approach to environmental
design displays a deep understanding of how disparate aspects such as forests, watersheds, agriculture, buildings, energy, and waste can be approached as integrated wholes, and led to the minimalist aesthetic and
constructional ingenuity now prized by both Japanese and audiences worldwide. Join Azby Brown for insight into what this approach entails, and the lessons we can apply to contemporary environmental and
architectural design problems.
Azby Brown is a leading authority on Japanese architecture, design, and environmentalism, and the author of seminal books including "The Genius of Japanese Carpentry" (1988),
"The Very Small Home" (2005), and "Just Enough: Lessons in living green from traditional Japan" (2010). Since the triple disaster of March, 2011, he has been lead researcher for Safecast, developing new global
technology platforms for crowdsourced environmental monitoring and promoting open-source and open data principles.
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing
global competition.
