Dear all,

Tuesday, May 18th, 2021, 4:30pm-5:30pm Pacific (PDT)

What happens to our understanding of the world if we go beyond comparative analysis, and instead examine the connections among nations? This is
what transnational (or global) history does. In such a light, key developments in Japan--nation-building, war, authoritarianism, democracy--become more comprehensible, as we analyze not only domestic factors, but also the impact of global ideas and practices that were circulating at the time. Sheldon Garon will introduce this approach, drawing on his global histories of savings-promotion, social policies, and "home fronts" in the world wars.

Guest Speaker:
Sheldon Garon is the Nissan Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Princeton University. A specialist in modern Japanese history, he also writes transnational history that spotlights the flow of ideas and institutions between Asia, Europe, and the United States. His books include "Beyond Our Means: Why America Spends While the World Saves", "Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life" and "The State and Labor in Modern Japan." He is currently writing a transnational history of home fronts in Japan, Germany, and Britain in the two world wars, focusing on bombing, food insecurity, and civilian "morale."

Moderator:
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate
strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes
how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.

We hope to see you there!

Coming up the following Wednesday (JST):
