As
the U.S. and other Western democracies grapple with deepening social,
economic and political divisions, Japan, by contrast, appears relatively
cohesive and stable. But Japan is by no means devoid of cleavages; it,
too, has struggled with populations and economic sectors that are at
risk of being "left behind," most notably by industrialization,
globalization and demographic change. How have these voices been
represented in the political and policy spheres, and at what cost?
Patricia Maclachlan, Japan political scientist at UT Austin, joins us
for a conversation of how consumers, postal employees, farmers and small
businesses have fared in Japan's rapidly changing political economy.
Guest Speaker:
Patricia
L. Maclachlan is Professor of Government and the Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Texas at
Austin. She is the author of "Consumer Politics in Postwar Japan: The
Institutional Boundaries of Citizen Activism" (Columbia UP 2002) and
"The People's Post Office: The History and Politics of the Japanese
Postal System, 1871-2010" (Harvard University East Asia Center 2011).
Her most recent book, on the reform of Japanese agriculture and
agricultural cooperatives (with Kay Shimizu), is forthcoming from
Cornell UP in 2021.
Moderator:
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of
Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her
research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including
business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020
book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese
companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global
competition.
We hope to see you there!
Coming up the following Wednesday (JST):
