Witnessing
the stress test of democratic institutions in our own time offers a
penetrating glimpse into conditions that enabled the rise of Japanese
fascism in the 1930s: the fragility of political norms, the
vulnerability of institutions to repurposing and hostile take-overs, the
Faustian bargains both large and small that chipped away at the guard
rails of democracy. Louise Young has written about politics and culture
in wartime Japan and the sources of right-wing extremism. Join us for a
discussion of the slide into de-facto dictatorship in 1930s Japan and
what it tells us about the nature of modern democratic states.

Guest Speaker:
Louise
Young is a social and cultural historian of modern Japan and a
Professor of Japanese History, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her
research and teaching interests include Japanese international
relations, World War Two in Asia, comparative imperialism and urban
history. She is currently working on two book projects. "The Idea of
Class in Modern Japan" is a social and intellectual history of the
transition from a feudal status system to a modern class hierarchy,
1860-1940. "Rethinking Japanese Imperialism" examines Japan in the world
as a history of the present, tracing this history from the forced
opening of the Japanese market in the mid nineteenth century to the
current conjuncture, with the rise of neo-nationalisms in Asia and the
challenge to the neo-liberal world order.

Moderator:
Ulrike
Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the
Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate
strategies, including business culture, change management, and business
organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes
how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the
changing global competition.

We hope to see you there!

Warm Regards,
The Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology, GPS, UC San Diego
