Overview

Relations between Australia and China have been on a downward spiral since 2017, hitting their lowest point in 2020. Beijing has imposed trade sanctions on a number of Australian industries, apparently in response to Canberra's call for an investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic. Is the current antagonism here to last? What does that mean for Australia's relationship with its largest trading partner? Is China's approach toward the dispute illustrative of broader trends in Chinese foreign policy?
