We are happy to invite you to a zoom session with Professors Naohiro Yashiro of Showa Women's University and Akashi Hongo of Temple University Japan.

Overview: For many decades, Japanese corporations and the public sector have provided significantly lower wages and benefits to their fixed-term employees than to those on a "lifetime employment" track even if cases where they perform the same tasks. These bifurcated labor markets have had a major impact on the entire political economy of Japan and its society. Professor Yashiro will discuss a recent Japanese The Supreme Court ruled in November that it is unreasonable for Japan Post Co. not to provide its fixed-term employees with the same allowances it pays to regular workers. Following Professor Yashiro's presentation, Professor Hongo will serve as a discussant prior to opening up the session to Q&A.

Presenter : Dr. Naohiro Yashiro is the Vice President at the Showa Women's University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Maryland. He was president of the Japan Center for Economic Research in 2000, and he was a member of the Council of Economic and Fiscal Policy (directly appointed by Prime Ministers Abe and Fukuda) from 2006 to 2008. Yashiro's areas of research include labor economics, social security and Japanese economy. Some of his recent publications include The Economic Effects of Aging in the United States and Japan, co-edited with Michael D. Hurd (University of Chicago, 1997); Health Care Issues in the United States and Japan, co-edited with David A. Wise (University of Chicago, 2006); "Myth about Japanese Employment Practices: An Increasing Insider-Outsider Conflict of Interests" in Contemporary Japan, vol. 23, no. 2 (2011).

Commentator: Dr. Akashi Hongo is an associate professor at Temple University, Japan Campus. Prior to joining TUJ, Hongo was in charge of planning, accounting, human resource, legal, compliance, general affairs, and international business development as a corporate officer at Recruit Management Solutions Co., Ltd. Hongo started his business career at Nippon Steel Co., Ltd. Then, he led value-based consulting practice in Japan and served as country representative for Stern Stewart & Co. Hongo is the author of many books (in Japanese) on finance and management, including a bi-lingual (J-E) guide to corporate finance.
