Lecture One: Dr. Barbara Thornbury (Temple University, USA) "Family and Society in Kore-eda Hirokazu's Kiki Kirin Films";
Lecture Two: Dr. Stephen Snyder (Middlebury College), "Translating Ogawa Yoko: Aesthetics meet the Market." (Both lectures will be pre-recorded and made accessible during the duration of the SORW and played on Nov 15.)

Part 2 - 10:00 am-11:30am
Dr. Thornbury and Dr. Snyder will join us live via Zoom for a Q&A session with members of the LIJ 89-19 project.


Speaker 1: Dr. Barbara Thornbury

Barbara E. Thornbury is professor of Japanese and chair of the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Studies at Temple University. She is the author of four books, the most recent of which is Mapping Tokyo in Fiction and Film (2020). She also co- edited and contributed to Tokyo: Memory, Imagination, and the City (2018). Other recent publications include "Cultural References in the Novels of Fuminori Nakamura: A Case Study in Current Japanese-to-English Literary Translation Practices and Challenges" (2017) and America's Japan and Japan's Performing Arts: Cultural Mobility and Exchange in New York, 1952-2011 (2013).


Speaker 2: Dr. Stephen Snyder

Stephen Snyder, Kawashima Professor of Japanese Studies at Middlebury College, serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Language Schools. He is the author of Fictions of Desire: Narrative Form in the Novels of Nagai Kafū (University of Hawai'i Press 2000) and has translated works by Yōko Ogawa and Kenzaburō Ōe, among others. His translation of Ogawa's Hotel Iris was shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2011, and his translation of Ogawa's Revenge was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction prize in 2014. His translation of Ogawa's The Memory Police was a finalist for the National Book Award for Translated Literature and for the International Booker Prize. He is currently working on a study of the publishing industry and its effect on literary canons in translation.


Lecture and discussion in English. No Japanese interpretation. Both Part 1 and 2 are open to the public
