Purpose:
Modern disciplinary knowledge introduced from the West, in its reorganization and institutionalization, contributed to nation-state building and social formation in Japan. Needless to say, universities, in particular research-focused national universities, played a vital role in this process. This role and its legacy, however, have not been sufficiently explored and understood. With this aim in mind, this workshop builds on Michel Foucault's analytical insights on knowledge and power to explore the relationship between modern governmentality and the changes in the structures of inclusion and exclusion of modern disciplinary knowledge at Tokyo (Imperial) University by focusing on the four concepts and related discourses (religion, race, history, publicness) that straddled humanities and social science disciplines.
