Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP): Enhancing Middle Power Cooperation & Coordination

Date: Monday, December 9, 2019
Location: Embassy of Canada, Tokyo

Synopsis:
The Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision (FOIP) has emerged as a framework for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Japan, Australia, ASEAN, and the United States have been at the forefront of the dialogue to realize FOIP. Other states are still considering the implications of this new geopolitical framework, and how they can contribute to its realization.

Key questions include:
1) Where are the areas of convergences in terms of interest and prioritization?
2) What capacity and capabilities can be brought to the table in terms of cooperation and coordination in the Indo-Pacific?
3) How to institutionalize this cooperation?

Informed by these lines of inquiry, this event aims to bring together experts to consider these questions and provide a framework for a broader, policy-oriented discussion that can be translated into policy recommendations.
