[SSJ: 10904] Tenure-track position in Transnational Japanese Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara

The Department of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Transnational Japanese Studies. We welcome applications from scholars working in the humanities and/or interpretive social sciences who study Japan from a transnational perspective. By "transnational perspective" we mean scholarship that addresses the movement and transformation of ideas, texts and media, materials, institutions, populations, and practices across borders and oceans. We are particularly interested in fields that complement and expand existing strengths and research areas in the Department and across campus, including interdisciplinary approaches to nature and the environment, the history of medicine and/or the medical humanities, and translation studies broadly conceived (between languages, media, genres or institutions). Applications from scholars whose work crosses the premodern/modern divide are especially welcome. Appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2020.
The successful candidate will be able to teach graduate seminars in transnational Japanese Studies, while also offering broader undergraduate courses. Applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a PhD, except the dissertation, at the time of application. The PhD can be in any field in the humanities and interpretive social sciences with research specialization in transnational Japanese Studies.
