Title: Workshop: "Confessions of a Community-engaged Theater Artist: Dilemmas, Struggles, and Why I Keep Doing It"

Speakers: Prof. Natsu Onoda Power (Georgetown University)

Abstract:
Since the 20th century, artists and activists have extensively used theater and performance as a catalyst for social change, and as a vehicle for community engagement. A performance event can powerfully bring a community together, address injustices and inequalities, give voices to the underrepresented, foster cross-cultural understanding, educate the audience, and more. At the same time, the practice of community-engaged performance is often fraught with ethical pitfalls and dilemmas. Using Dwight Conquergood's essay "Performing as a Moral Act: Ethical Dimensions of the Ethnography of Performance" as a point of departure, and using my own experiences as case studies, this presentation explores the challenges of ethnography and community-based theater.

Speaker Bio:
Natsu Onoda Power is a theater artist based in Washington DC and an Associate Professor of Theater and Performance Studies at Georgetown University.
