The printed book in early modern Japan: a convergence of technology, commerce and art

In this lecture, Dr Ellis TINIOS will consider the linguistic, technological and economic factors that lead to the adoption of cut woodblocks rather than moveable type for book production in early modern Japan. He will then examine the impact of that choice on book design. Particular attention will be paid to the cultivation of the aesthetics of script in print and to the seamless integration of text and image. He will also address the book as a work of art issued in multiples and touch upon the production, distribution and consumption of books in early modern Japan.

Dr Tinios lives in the UK. He trained at Harvard, Leeds and Ann Arbor. Now retired, he was lecturer/senior lecturer in East Asian history in the School of History, University of Leeds. He is a Research Associate of the Art Research Center, Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto and Special Assistant to the Japanese Section at the British Museum in London. His recent publications include Understanding Japanese woodblock-printed illustrated books with Prof Suzuki Jun (Brill) and Japanese Prints: Ukiyo-e in Edo (British Museum Press). His current research is focused on the publication histories of Hokusai's books, and publishers' catalogues.
