Rapid Religious Change: American Southern Millennial's Changing Views about Same-Sex Marriage

J. Derrick Lemons (University of Georgia in Athens)

18:00-19:30, October 3rd, 2019

Room 301, 3F, Building 10, Sophia University

There is a critical need for research to determine the influences and processes of rapid religious cultural change and innovation. One important question to answer is "Why do religious beliefs at times change very quickly and what kinds of societal impacts do these changes have?" Drawing upon ethnographic research data collected in 2013 and 2016, this paper uses theologically engaged anthropology and diffusion theory to better understand the rapid religious change of American Christian millennials' views toward same-sex marriage.

J. Derrick Lemons is an Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, USA. He graduated from Southern Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science in Religion (1994) and from Asbury Theological Seminary with a Master's (1997) and Doctorate (2008). He is a Visiting Fellow at Christ Church, the University of Oxford and the Religion Fellow for the Willson Center for Humanities and Art at the University of Georgia. He is the President of the American Academy of Religion for the Southeastern Region, Regional Coordinator of the American Academy of Religion, and the Director of the Center for Theologically Engaged Anthropology.
