[SSJ: 10813] New book announcement: The Ever-Changing Sino-Japanese Rivalry, Routledge

Hello,

I am writing to announce the recent publication of my book, The Ever-Changing Sino-Japanese Rivalry, with Routledge. It might be of interest to some of you.

This book seeks to fill the gap between the literature on the Sino-Japanese relationship and the interstate rivalry literature from the field of international relations. The book's argument uses two factors - the presence of outbidding by the domestic political opposition and expected costs of the rivalry - to explain why leaders of states engaged in a rivalry will choose to escalate, de-escalate, or maintain the status quo of the rivalry. The book then uses qualitative case studies of decision-making in the Sino-Japanese rivalry between 1874-1945 and 1995-2018 to provide empirical support for the argument. The argument is supported in a majority of cases of escalation and de-escalation between China and Japan.
