[SSJ: 10806] September 19 Free Lecture at Lakeland University: "Peak Japan"

From: Roger Grabowski <grabowski@japan.lakeland.edu>
Date: 2019/09/04

This lecture (in English) will be held Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 at Lakeland University in Shinjuku.

"Understanding Peak Japan", presented by Brad Glosserman

In his book Peak Japan, Brad Glosserman argues that Japan, once heralded for evolving a superior form of capitalism and seemingly ready to surpass the United States as the world's largest economy, lost its way in the 1990s. Drawing on extensive research and decades of experience living and working in Japan, the book explains why the country has continued on its own trajectory, largely impervious to broader shifts. While Prime Minister Abe has made great progress in changing perceptions of Japan, Glosserman believes that his administration has been unable to reinvigorate the country. Has Japan reached its apogee of power, and if so, what are the implications?

Brad Glosserman is deputy director of and visiting professor at the Center for Rule Making Strategies, Tama University, and a senior advisor (nonresident) at Pacific Forum International. His new book, Peak Japan: The End of Great Ambitions, was recently released by Georgetown University Press. He is also the co-author (with Scott Snyder) of The Japan-South Korea Identity Clash (Columbia University Press, 2015) He was from 2001-2017 the executive director of Pacific Forum, a foreign policy think tank that focuses on the Asia-Pacific, and was from 1991-2001 a member of the Japan Times editorial board, where he is still a contributing editor.
