Applications are invited for a full-time 5 year-Research Fellowship in Japanese History and Culture to be held at the Institute of Japanese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. The position is part of the European Research Council-funded project 'Law without Mercy: Japanese Courts-Martial and Military Courts During the Asia-Pacific War, 1937-45' (ERC-2018-COG 819892) led by Professor Urs Matthias Zachmann that seeks to understand the role that law and military justice played in the mass violence of the Asia-Pacific War in North and Southeast Asia (for more information on the project, see https://www.geschkult.fu-berlin.de/e/oas/japanologie/forschung/erc_lwm/index.html).



Job description:
The successful candidate will develop independent research within the thematic scope of this project, resulting in a monograph and articles, while at the same time actively contribute to the project as a whole through regular participation in joint research activities (workshops, seminars etc.). Successful candidates will have a documented expertise in modern Japanese history and experience with using Japanese archival materials. Applications would be particularly welcome from researchers who work in the fields of legal, intellectual, political, diplomatic or military history from a transnational, regional perspective. Although law is central to the project, technical legal expertise is not a prerequisite for applying.


We offer a full-time 5-year research position in an innovative fully-funded ERC research project. The candidate will be part of a stimulating, interdisciplinary research environment at Freie Universität Berlin and have access to funding for fieldwork and conference travel. The working language of the project is English,optionally also Japanese. Candidates will be expected to be regularly present in the office to work with other members of the team. Tenure of the position begins 1 October 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, and ends 30 September 2024.



Requirements:
- PhD degree in Japanese Studies, or History, Law and related disciplines with a focus on Japan
- Excellent Japanese-language skills, particularly of written Japanese



Desirable:
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
- Previous experience in archival work
