Symposium: Celebration Capitalism and the Olympic Games
Date: July 21, 2019, 1:30-5 pm
Venue: Waseda University Bldg. 16, Room 106

Prominent Olympics scholar Jules Boykoff is the keynote speaker at a symposium on July 21st at Waseda University about his much-cited concept of the Olympic Games as "celebration capitalism."

One year before the 2020 Summer Games start in Tokyo, Professor Boykoff will give a timely lecture about how the Olympics usher in a state of exception that permits increased militarization and public funding of development projects that primarily benefit private corporations.

The symposium also features a panel discussion between Professor Boykoff, Professor Atsuhisa Yamamoto of Seijo University, and activist Misako Ichimura of the grassroots anti-2020 protest group Hangorin no Kai. This is followed by an audience Q&A.
