Overview:

Over the past decades, global mobility of students grew from 2.2 million in 2001 to 5.1 million in 2016--an increase of 130%--according to the UNESCO. However, this singular growth trajectory in the number of students masks the qualitative shifts and underlying trends and issues shaping the mobility patterns. To this end, there is a need to better understand the shifts in terms of source and destination countries along with student segments and national policies.

Student mobility can be analyzed from the lens of three Waves marked by key external events. While the first and second Waves were characterized by the terrorist attack and global financial recession respectively, third Wave is shaped by the new political order which is intensifying global competition for attracting international students. In this Wave growing ambition and competitiveness of Asian universities to attract international students is going to shift mobility patterns of students in search of value for money.
