Dear Forum Members:

With apologies for the late announcement, I'd like to call your attention to an upcoming talk at Waseda's Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies by Professor Robert Hellyer (Wake Forest University), one of the pre-eminent economic historians of Japan, with a particular focus on international trade.

"The Making of Japan Tea: Green Tea's Journey Across the Pacific, 1860 to 1960"

March 13, 2019 1:30-3:00 p.m.
GSAPS, Building #19, 7F - Room 710

This talk draws from his current project, and will detail how Japan developed a tea export industry in the early Meiji period, shipping green tea to the United States. The trade would thrive into the 1920s and its decline created tea consumption patterns in Japan that extend to today.

Professor Hellyer earned his PhD in History at Stanford University, and his first book, "Defining Engagement: Japan and Global Contexts, 1640-1868" (Harvard University Asia Center/Harvard University Press, 2009) traced Japan's embeddedness in trade routes in the late Tokugawa era. Before taking his current position at Wake Forest University, Professor Hellyer taught at Allegheny College and served as research associate at the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Japan Foundation.

There is no RSVP required, but if you have any questions, please contact me at dleheny@waseda.jp <mailto:dleheny@waseda.jp>.

I hope to see you there.

Best wishes,
