TOPIC AND TREATMENT AREAS:

Cases from the author's 35+ research studies of things foreign entering Japan, and things Japanese entering Western nations and CHina, distilled from 4000 referenes and 15 action research programs and organizaitons founded--USED TO ILLUSTRATE 2 new theory-derived models of all cultures and how to handle them--the Shared Practiced Routines model and the 5 Pairs model--definitions-uses, operations-tools, traits-dimensions, types-socialprocess locations, high performances-powers.

Half the contents were previously journal published, published presentations at conferences and Corporate Research Announcement events, and notes from new courses requested by founders of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, the author's first academic job 2 years before his Phd. was awarded.

2 chapters formed part of the final presentations that won Sekisui Chemical the Deming Prize and one other chapter was cited in the Baldrige Award, 12 years later that Xerox PARC won. Both are now being followed up via the author's leading the creation of Deep Learning Circles in China, under the auspices of Detao Masters Academy.

Some chapters are clearly abstract theory and academic, some are blends such as applied fields genearte, and others are theory-explicated and guided case expatiations. Front and back matter is largely polemic.

The contents were the primary course material for at total of 11 courses at U Chicago, Temple U, Keio U, Kansai Gaidai U, Kwansei Gakuin U, Beijing U, Fudan U.

people defending "nation" are not adult not safe = controlled by theories societies put in them as kids

thinking professionally about cultures rare and hard

the idea of "a book on the culture of Japan" etc. is ridiculous--no one has experienced all of "Japan" or all of any one nation, ever

INSTEAD, this is a book on a science of noticing/handling diverse differences

girls wanting sex and power to stop wars in 1960s

USA abuses its own population; Japan yakuza visit critics of their one party state

Japan invented anti-culture to its own culture that defeated quality of whole world

Japan great anti-pollution/aging-insurance systems not from votes but women demonstrating

all nations, groups = horrors wonders mixed

cultures inside us blind us to cultures around us SO

only educated, adults can be trusted to handle culture

----all traits of all cultures appear USED not neutrally; so

going out requires going in and vice versa

your hometown ways/views mis-fire outside that locale

FOUNDATIONS--Chapter 1, page 102

Provisos--

cultures are distributions not point values; no one in any culture acts averagely;

cultures are 3 distributions, ways, attitudes, theories that overlap differently;

culture are huge powers that are very weak; effortlessness and sharing of culture ways bribe us to the error of thinking those ways are safe or effective;

moms cause wars via teaching "right" ways; natural selection wants varieties of mind--fights societies wanting uniform minds;

Roman ways not safe in Rome some foreign ways fix what Romans never notice/fix;

every aspect of personal ID shrinks the size of world we operate in and notice/sympathize with;

close friends and family oppose our growth;

fast emotive brain pre-narrows what concept brain notices;

culture traits never appear neutrally in situations but only used by hidden interests;

all cultures treat selves as teams to root for and against other teams/cultures = wars;

cultures and theories of cultures used for hidden profits/interests;

many kinds of unknownness of us to us, others to others, us to others.

CULTURES TO, FROM, & IN JAPAN--Chapter 2, page 272

Japan--from isolation outside to isolation inside

SO isolation makes Japan creative but globally weak

Managing by fact in Japan--socially, in USA--tech-ly

Managing by fact COUNTERS dominant emotionality there

Slowness, too many meetings--consensus by BOREDOM, consensus on vague concept statements = tatemae, faked, agreement misread by visitors

USA spread disease of venal MBAs--Japan resisted, Canada fixed via "business is design art" not "econ science"--Silicon Valley ruined by MBAs now

Design Thinking copies its methods from software--fast prototypes, user empathy, iteration, agile

Knowledge Delivery, High Tech Delivery--in Japan via whole-workforce-as-computer social tactics, Manage by Events, in USA by email, techs

Japan's totalizings of knowledge and new tech handling = de-elitizing, democratizing, de-profession-izing, de-academy-izing, de-PHD-izing

Silicon Valley from people who "go West"; Jobs-Apple from people who went beyond California west to Japan

The Buddhist core of imagined penis nosed dogs as masturbation convenience in manga

The deep religiosity of practices in Japan today

The habits of central dictatorship---whole population automatically works petty scale details, only Daimyo works forest, rest work trees, twigs

Lao-Tzu--the power of no, not, nothingness--Japanese a language optimized for NOT saying, Japanese people selves that erase themselves in all situations, groups that are composed of no individuals.
