Sophia University Institute of Comparative Culture Lecture Series 2018

Japan's changing roles in the construction of East Asia's regional order

Dr. Pablo Pareja-Alcaraz

November 15, 2018

18:30-20:00

Room 301, 3F, Building 10, Sophia University

The past seven decades have witnessed the gradual consolidation of a singular regional order in East Asia. The construction of this order is the result of a complex interplay between different actors, and between them and several structures. In spite of its adherence to a low-profile foreign policy and the resistance of many of its neighours, Japan has gradually embraced a more proactive role in this multilayered, complex process, and it has even acted as one of the main promoters of change in the last two decades. The aim of this talk is threefold: first, to describe the main components and phases of East Asia's regional order; second, to analyze the position of Japan vis-à-vis these components in each phase, as well as its more relevant contributions to the consolidation of the regionalorder; finally, to reflect on Japan's current role in the adaptation of the regional order in light of the new regional and international scenarios, and the growing role of China.

Pablo Pareja-Alcaraz is Serra Húnter Fellow in International Relations and Vice-provost of Student Affairs at the University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. He is also Academic Coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Public Policy at the Barcelona Institute of Internacional Studies, and member to the Board of Directors is the Spanish Association for the United Nations. His research interests include: 1) The study of continuity and change in contemporary international relations, in particular with regards to the current international order; 2) The analysis of conflict and cooperation in Asian international relations; and 3) The examination of security transformations and the rise of private actors in the provision of security. He is currently working on an interdisciplinary project on the construction of global norms.
