Overview:

Following the US mid-term Congressional elections, we will have a discussion their results and what they tell us about American society and its evolution. We'll also discuss how young Japanese are reacting to events in the United States and how this impacts Japanese society and perceptions of the United States.



Speakers:

Miya Shichinohe-Suga is professor in the Area Studies Department at Tokyo Gakugei University. A historian specializing on the US Census, race and immigration/migration, her current book projects are on the how the he US Census had enumerated minorities, e.g., "Free Blacks," "Civilized Indians," and Asians, and on Japanese trans-Pacific migration from 1860 to 1885. Her recent publications include the following: "Nihonjin ijyūshi to sensasushi no linkēji: 1860-1870, [Linking US Census history and Japanese migration history: 1860-1870]," Journal of the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum, JICA Yokohama 12 (March 2018). She served as a visiting scholar at the US Census Bureau in Washington DC in 2008. Paul Sracic is Chair of the Department of Politics and International Relations at Youngstown State University in Ohio. He is currently a Visiting Fulbright Lecturer at Waseda University and at Yokohama National University. In 2009-2010, he was a Visiting Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Tokyo and Sophia University. Dr. Sracic holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University, and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Albright College. His most recent book, Ohio Politics, was published by Congressional Quarterly Press in March of 2018. An earlier book, San Antonio v. Rodriguez and the Pursuit of Equal Education (University Press of Kansas, 2006), was part of a series that was given the Scribes Award for legal writing by the American Bar Association. In addition to his scholarly writing, Dr. Sracic is a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages in the United States and interviewed by the international news media.
