Assistant Professor in Contemporary Japanese Society (focus on Gender Studies preferred)
The Department of Japanese Studies, National University of Singapore, invites applications for a position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in contemporary Japanese society (focus on gender studies preferred) beginning January 2019.
Applicants should have a relevant Ph.D. in sociology, anthropology, cultural or area studies, with a focus on Japan. They should be able to demonstrate strong academic, teaching and administrative abilities, and willingness to promote a collaborative departmental culture.
Candidates will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Duties will also include supervising undergraduate and graduate independent study. Candidates should also be willing to contribute to the team-taught, interdisciplinary modules offered by the Japanese Studies Department. Fluency in English and Japanese is required.
The Department of Japanese Studies was founded 35 years ago and currently has ten colleagues specializing in a variety of fields such as anthropology, business, politics, history, popular culture, literature, linguistics and geography. The Department belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) that combines disciplinary departments with area studies departments in Asian Studies, and is supported by a comprehensive Japanese language programme in the university's Centre for Language Studies.
The National University of Singapore is consistently ranked as one of the world's best universities and has an active research culture. Colleagues collaborate within FASS in research clusters such as urban studies, religion, health, migration, environment or science, technology or society, as well as with the university's Asia Research Institute (ARI).
