Abstract:
More than 70 years have passed since the end of WWII and the Japanese
occupation of the Dutch East Indies, yet even today, many children born of war
of Indo-European (Dutch/European and Indonesian) and Japanese descent
remain deeply invested in the search for their Japanese fathers. Why are they,
even now, searching for their fathers? What has been lost, and what can be
gained? What does it mean to be the child of an Indo-European mother and
Japanese father, born during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies?
In this talk, I will examine the life stories of Indo-European children born of war
in search for their Japanese fathers, to explore not only their personal journeys
in encountering Japan, but also the continuing impact of the history of the
Japanese occupation on their lives in the Netherlands.
