My name is Darren Biggs, Manager of Program Operations at the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). Located on Sophia University campus, we are a subsidiary of CIEE in the US. CIEE Tokyo offers a variety of study abroad programs in Japan to students from universities and colleges across the US, including semester, summer, and special short-term programs.

In May 2018 we expect to host a group of up to 20 students from the University of Michigan for a short-term program. As part of this program, we are searching for an instructor to teach an intensive 3-credit / 45-hour course on “Japanese Culture and Society.” Would you be able to post the following job description? Instructor for a college level course on “Japanese Culture and Society”

About the course:

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), the largest and oldest international education NPO in the US, is planning to run a short-term study abroad program in Tokyo for students from the University of Michigan (UM). The program will include a course on Japanese Culture and Society. The theme of Japanese Culture and Society is interpreted broadly; the instructor is encouraged to apply his/her own expertise to the curriculum.

This course will have 45 contact hours for 3 credits and will be taught in English. Contact hours are based on the US system, with 50 minutes of classroom instruction + a 10 minute break equaling one contact hour. The instructor may count guest lectures, field trips, co-curricular activities, and videos toward contact hours, provided they follow CIEE’s academic guidelines regarding contact hours.

This will be an introductory level course. Students may not necessarily be majoring in Japanese, Asian Studies, or a related field. The estimated number of students is 12 to 20.

Friday May 4 to Wednesday May 23, 2018.

Office hours: The instructor must be able to answer students’ questions about the course outside of class via email. Ideally, the instructor will hold office hours during the program.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in Japanese Studies, Asian Studies, or related field

· Experience as a Teacher’s Assistant or lead instructor for a college level course

· Must reside in Tokyo at the time of the course

· Native level English

Preferred Qualifications:

· PhD in Japanese Studies, Asian Studies, or related field, with teaching experience at the college level in a relevant subject.

2) Write an outline for the course you would teach for CIEE / UM in May. Include the following in your outline. You may refer to CIEE’s syllabus template here. (A complete syllabus – e.g. one that you’ve taught before – is preferred, but not required at this stage. If selected, you would later be required to submit a complete syllabus following CIEE’s academic guidelines by the designated deadline.)

· Course description: Enter a one or two paragraph course description.

· Learning objectives: Enter the goals for the course and what students are expected to learn.

· Methods of instruction: Describe how the course will be taught, including use of PowerPoint, films, guest lectures, fieldtrips, class debates, and lectures, etc. (Note that if selected you may have to modify your methods to fit CIEE’s academic standards and guidelines.)

· Schedule outline: Show the timing of the topics you intend to cover. Refer to the “course dates and times” section above.

3) Cover letter

· Include commentary on how your education and experience position you to effectively teach the course that you’ve outlined.

Application schedule:

· Submit cover letter, resume / CV, and course outline by Friday November 24.

· Applicants who pass the initial paper review will be contacted to interview. Interviews will be held in person or through an online video conference, depending on the applicant’s location.

· CIEE and University of Michigan aim to select the instructor by January 2018.

· If selected, you will be required to submit a complete syllabus by the designated deadline using CIEE’s syllabus template here. Your syllabus must adhere to CIEE’s academic guidelines.

Compensation:

Ranges from 300,000 (three hundred thousand) yen. Dependent on qualifications and experience.

· In addition, transportation costs of up to 30,000 yen total may be covered.

· Additional funding may be available for field trips and co-curricular activities that count toward contact hours, with prior approval from CIEE.

· Relevant taxes will be deducted.
