[SSJ: 9984] Early Impressions

Early impression of the elections' results:

What stands out is the very high rate reelection of incumbents - not only in the LDP, but also in the KNT.

There is an interesting article in the Mainichi comparing the high rate of survival of "Abe's children" (those who were first elected in 2012) to the low rate of Koizumi's and Ozawa's, respectively. It's author attributes it largely to the "tanabata" (godsend) of the failure of the opposition.

My impression is that in the case of the KNT, the incumbents, who won reelection, are former DP fellow travelers. They are likely to be those well established in their respective electoral districts, who brought their supporters along. They either won outright, or as "resurrected" (fukkatsu).

Had Koike been less haughty, and she refrained from giving DP members an "admission test," her party could have won more seats.

My guess is that among those who initially intended to vote for the KNT, have voted for other parties, possibly Edano's CDP, realizing that the KNT turned out to be a "fake party": (a) a "fake LDP "ideologically," and (b) a fake DP practically, in terms of candidates.

There are two winners: Abe consolidated his position on the right, and is likely to have his tenure as party president extended (like in the case of Nakasone, but, unlike the case of Nakasone, possibly for more than one year). Edano has emerged as the leader of the"moderate left."
