Recent years show increasing employment flexibility, such as diffusion of non-regular employment, leading to a further expansion of social inequalities in many countries.
In this presentation, Dr. Arita discusses on the issues of disadvantaged non-regular employment, which he claims is under significant influence of institutional conditions in each society. Comparing Japan, the US, and South Korea, he will propose a "new" explanatory framework for formation mechanisms of social inequality with a focus on employment structure.


Shin Arita specializes in comparative sociology, particularly of education, labor market and social stratification in East Asia. His major publications include Education and Social Stratification in South Korea(University of Tokyo Press, 2006.InJapanese), "Comparative Structures of Social Stratification in East Asia: What are the Variables Leading to Differences in Remuneration and Status?"(in Contemporary Stratified Society2: Structure of Inequality and Mobility, Hiroshi Ishida et al, eds.
