November 27, 2012
17:00-18:30
Room 301, 3F, Building 10, Sophia University Yotsuya Campus

This talk will provide an introduction to a broad range of critical aesthetic responses to the catastrophe of 3.11. Focusing primarily on the visual and performing arts, it starts by questioning the idea of “catastrophe” and its relationship to memory (and rememoration), specifically as it relates to 3.11 and its aftermath. The talk will pay particular attention to artistic engagements with the nuclear disaster at Fukushima and the uncertain and shifting status of “radiation” as an object of aesthetico-political critique.

Marilyn Ivy is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Columbia University. She is the author of numerous articles and essays concerning modernity, mass mediation, aesthetics, and politics in contemporary Japan, and her book Discourses of the Vanishing: Modernity, Phantasm, Japan (Univ. of Chicago Press, 1995) won the 1996 Hiromi Arisawa Memorial Award for Japanese Studies from the American Association of University Presses. Professor Ivy is on the editorial board of the journal positions: east asia cultures critique and has been a long-time member of the editorial group for the journal Public Culture. She is currently a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo, conducting research and fieldwork concerning art, affect, and politics.
