The dramatic events of the past year have led some North Korea experts to predict similarly dramatic changes in the regime and its relation to the outside world. However, much of the upheaval in North Korea― negotiations to restart the Six Party Talks, the spread of legal and illegal technology―began long before Kim Jong Un succeeded his father. Based upon his longtime research, Professor Boynton will discuss the meaning of recent developments in North Korea.

Robert S. Boynton received his M.A. in Political Philosophy from Yale University. He writes about culture, ideas and journalism in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, New York Times Magazine, and other magazines and newspapers. His study of contemporary American literary journalism, The New New Journalism, was published by Random House in 2005. He was a Japan Society Media Fellow as well as an SSRC/CGP Abe Fellow.
He is currently a Fulbright Fellow in Japan, and is working on a book about North Korea’s abduction of Japanese and South Korean citizens.
