Title:
Environmental Security in International Politics

Abstract:
Environmental security is one of a number of new, non-traditional security issues that have served to deepen and broaden the concept of security. It helps to deepen security as it entails considering not just the security of states, but also the security of the global environment as well as its many sub-systems, and various social systems. It broadens security by considering risks posed by environmental change. This lecture will provide a brief overview of the origins of the concept of environmental security, how it entered in the study of international politics, and the major interpretations of environmental security. It will also cover the issue of the relationship of environmental security with violent conflict, national security, armed forces and human security.
