[SSJ: 6942] New Doctorial Program on Asian Economy and Business

New Doctoral Program in Asian Economy and Business in Stockholm

Asia is where the economy is growing more rapidly than anywhere else in the world, and it is widely believed that the continent will witness even greater growth in the future. Yet despite the region's obvious importance Europe clearly suffers from a serious shortage of young professionals able to operate freely and effectively in the major regional languages, combined with profound insights into the ways in which business and management operate in East Asia. The European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) and the China Economic Research Center(CERC) at Stockholm School of Economics see it as their mission to help rectify this situation. We have decided to initiate a Doctoral Program in Asian Economy and Business to significantly raise the requisite level of specialized competence and knowledge among talented young economists.

The Program will gather up to 10 Ph.D. candidates that will be placed within the SSE's regular Ph.D. programs (mostly Business Administration but also Economics and Finance). Beside the regular entrance criteria (see the school web page
http://www.hhs.se/Education/PhD/Pages/default.aspx) the candidates also need to master one of the major Asian languages (Japanese, Chinese or Korean). The idea is that the "Asia group" shall be sitting together, in close vicinity to EIJS and CERC during their study time and in this way constitute part of an "Asian academic hub" at the school. Besides the regular curriculum there will be a number of Asia related seminars and other activities to take part in. What is different with this program is also that we will be working very closely with business society. We are asking various companies to "sponsor a Ph.D. candidate". So far three companies have agreed to this and we are now starting the recruitment of our first candidates. At the moment we are looking for two candidates working on Japan with a deadline for applications on December 15 2011 and another one working on China with a deadline of application on February 1 2012.

The Program is a five year one and it is given in English.
