SUMMARY

As Asia's rapid economic growth dramatically increases its energy demand, competition over control of key resources is fueling mistrust and national suspicion among major powers in the region. Given fears that this increasingly toxic atmosphere could result in conflict, what are the implications of Asia's nationalistic policies for the region's strategic rivalries - most importantly the United States and China?

With these concerns in mind, this year's Energy Security Report, "Asia's Rising Energy and Resource Nationalism," analyzes major risks emanating from Asia's growing insecurity and outlines opportunities for enhancing engagement between U.S. and Asian stakeholders. Insights focus on:

- The connection between energy and control of major sea lanes

- The impact of Asia's national oil companies on the competitive landscape of the oil industry, and

- The emergence of rare earth elements as an arena for national competition, with perspectives from both China and Japan
