[SSJ: 6803] Abe Fellowship Colloquium: East Asian Regionalism and US-Japan Relations

From: SSRC Tokyo Office
Date: 2011/08/22

The Social Science Research Council Tokyo Office and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership present the 2011 Abe Fellowship Colloquium:

"East Asian Regionalism and US-Japan Relations"

Note: The presentation will be in Japanese. Admission is free.

In 2009 Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama announced a new foreign policy
initiative: creation of an East Asian Community. Many observers said the objective conflicted with close ties to the United States. Is this zero-sum assessment correct? Will the burgeoning multilateral economic and trade networks in East Asia and across the Asia-Pacific region inevitably lead to regional integration like the European Union? Scholars and policy wonks in Asia have been debating these questions for years.

Eiichi Shindo, author of "Building an East Asian Community," will analyze the impact of regional integration on Japan's security and economic relationship with Washington. Integration in Asia is a response to globalization and advances in information technology, Shindo believes. The presentation will also touch on the fiction of a "China threat" and developments since the Tohoku disaster.

Speaker: Eiichi Shindo

Dr. Shindo is Co-President of the International Academic Society for Asian Community, Vice President of the Council on East Asian Community, and Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Tsukuba.
He is a 2001 recipient of an Abe Fellowship, for which his project title was "Constructing a Cooperative Security Regime in East Asia: Comparative Analyses of CSCE / OSCE, ARF, KEDO." Dr. Shindo received his doctoral degree in law from the University of Kyoto.
His research interests revolve around politics and international relations in Asia and his numerous publications include Higashi ajia kyodotai to nihon no senryaku [East Asian Community and Strategies for Japan] (Oubirin University Press 2011), Higashi ajia kyodaitai wo dotsukuruka [Building an East Asian Community] (Chikuma Shinsho, 2007), and Sengo nihon seiji to heiwa gaiko - 21 seiki ajia kyosei jidai no shiza [The Politics and Peace Diplomacy of Postwar Japan] (Horitsu Bunkasha, 2007).
