[SSJ: 6800] New Book on Japanese Health Care

From: YAMAGISHI Takakazu
Date: 2011/08/11

Dear colleagues,

I am happy to announce my new book on the development of health insurance policy in Japan and the United States:

Takakazu Yamagishi, War and Health Insurance Policy in Japan and the United States: World War II to Postwar Reconstruction (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2011)

The book demonstrates how World War II and the postwar reconstruction gave incentives for the governments of Japan and the United States to intervene in health care. It argues that both countries saw the expansion of health insurance coverage but adopted different kind of health insurance system largely because they had different war experiences. The last chapter of the book also includes how, through the window of the American occupation, political battle concerning Harry Truman's health care reform proposal in the United States affected the trajectory of health care reform in Japan .
