[SSJ: 6728] Volunteer Relief Information: Peace Boat Japan table at ASCJ

From: David H. Slater
Date: 2011/06/23

There has been great interest among academics and scholars in volunteering in Tohoku in response to the triple tragedies that has befallen them. Before anyone goes up North, it is vitally important to get as full information as possible. Many on this list have worked to supply this information.

Now the Asian Studies Conference in Japan (ASCJ) has generous allowed Peace Boat Japan-one of the largest, most organized and safety-conscious relief NPOs-to set up an information table at their conference this weekend (June 25th and 26th at ICU in Mitaka). A Peace Boat representative will be there on Saturday for sure. (Staffing is tight and we are still working on finding someone to be there on Sunday so just to be safe, stop by on Saturday!)

For those who are unfamiliar with volunteering, they will answer your questions about the current situation, the shifting needs of relief work, and logics of volunteering (dates, equipment, and the requirement that everyone goes to a pre-departure orientation briefing). For those who have already gone up-and I know that there are many of you-stop by the table and share your experiences with those who have not yet gone up.

Find a group of friends to go up together with! Take your whole ASCJ panel and form a work group. Or go with others from your home institution so you can continue your efforts when you go back home.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
David Slater
