Dear list members,
It is my great pleasure to announce the following
event:
Sophia University Institute of Comparative Culture Lecture Series 2011:
Reading China from the Villages. Studying Grassroots change in the 20th century North China.
Linda Grove (Professor, FLA, Sophia University)
Saturday, April 16, 2011
3:00 - 5:00 pm
Room 102, 1st floor, Bldg 12
Sophia University Yotsuya Campus
The 20th century in China was a century of revolution beginning with the 1911 revolution that overthrew an imperial system that had lasted for 2000 years and ending with an economic revolution that has transformed China from a poor socialist country to one of the main engines ofthe global economy. In between were decades of revolutionary activity that brought the Chinese Communist Party to power and that led to top-down efforts to create a socialist socie and a new "socialist man." For the last 20 years I have been a member of a joint Japanese-Chinese project that set out to discover how these events had changed the lives of people in the villages of North China. Building on surveys done by Japanese scholars in the early 1940s, we returned to the same villages in the 1990s to try to understand how they had experienced the various revolutions and movements of the latter half of the 20th century. This talk will introduce the village studies and materials gained from recent visits over the last three years to consider the impact of socialism and the economic reforms in different village contexts, and the factors that may help to explain their different trajectories of development.
Lecture in English (Japanese resume provided) / No registration necessary / Free of charge
