ASEAN has made a great contribution to regional order and international cooperation. Now, in a time of a great transition, when the global landscape is being reconfigured and the world's strategic and economic weight is shifting to the Asia Pacific region, ASEAN faces new challenges. Indonesia, which holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, is rising to the challenge of meeting the questions: What is the role of Indonesia, of Japan, and of ASEAN, in realizing a stronger, closer community in this region? His Excellency Dr. Marty Natalegawa will share with us his views, drawing upon his long career in representing Indonesia in the international community.


Speaker's Profile:
Dr. Marty Natalegawa
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia

Dr. R. M. Marty Natalegawa, was appointed as the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia on 22 October 2009. Prior to this, he was the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York (2007 - 2009), where he served as the President of the Security Council; Chairman of the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Chairman of the Asia Group; Co-Facilitator of the President of the General Assembly for the Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights in December 2008; and Chairman of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization.

He served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Court of St.
James's and Ireland (2005 - 2007) and consecutively served as the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and as the Director General for ASEAN Cooperation in the Department of Foreign Affairs (2002 - 2005). While serving in the aforementioned posts, he concurrently served the position of Spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Natalegawa obtained a Doctor of Philosophy at the ANU; a Master of Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge; and a BSc
(Hons) at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
