Date: 2011/01/05

Invitation to EIJS Academy Seminars 2010-2011 The 5th Seminar on Wednesday, January 26th, 2011
Topic: "Regional Economic Integration in Asia-Pacific
and Japan's FTA Policy"

Speaker: Dr. Shujiro Urata, Ph.D.
Professor, Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University

The Asia-Pacific region has seen the emergence of regional integration in recent decades. Two main drivers of regional economic integration are market forces and institutional arrangement. In East Asia it was market forces that led to regional economic integration in the 1980s and 1990s, while the importance of institutional arrangement such as free trade agreements increased in the 21st century. In the presentation, we would hear Dr. Urata's view on recent developments and characteristics of regional economic integration in Asia-Pacific with a focus on Japan's FTA policy.

Dr. Shujiro Urata is Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University, Faculty Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry, Research Fellow at the Japanese Centre for Economic Research, Senior Research Advisor, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). Professor Urata received his undergraduate degree from Keio University and obtained M.A. and Ph.D.
in economics from Stanford University. He is a former Research Associate at the Brookings Institute and an economist at the World Bank. He specializes in international economics.
