Throughout its 100-year history, the Japan Studies Program, in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle, has consistently represented excellence in scholarship and teaching, and it is perennially one of the top Japan Studies programs in the nation. As the study of Japan enters its second century at the UW, the program continues to pursue its mission to foster greater understanding of Japan and its relationship with the global community, and also to prepare students to pursue their professional goals and become better global citizens.

The Jackson School invites applications for either a Visiting Lecturer or a Postdoctoral Fellow in Japan Studies during academic year 2011-2012 (September 16, 2011-June 15, 2012), contingent on budgetary approval. Appointment is expected to be for the full academic year, although appointment for just one academic quarter may be considered, particularly for senior scholars. Candidates must have research and teaching experience related to political science of Japan or the Japanese political economy, knowledge of Japanese language, fluency in English, a completed PhD, and a record of scholarship. The position will have teaching responsibilities; the number of classes taught will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications and the length of the appointment. The selected scholar is expected to participate in the activities of the Japan Studies Program, including presentation of a Japan Colloquium on a subject of his or her research.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, information valuable for assessing the undergraduate and graduate courses the applicant could teach at UW, most helpfully draft syllabi, or at least titles and brief summaries for courses for which syllabi have not yet been developed; a CV; a one-page description of research plans; and three letters of recommendation. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Designation as Visiting Lecturer or Postdoctoral Fellow will depend upon the qualifications and teaching responsibilities of the successful applicant.
