I also found Ann Waswo's comments on the construction of memoryof WWII in the US
very interesting, particularly since I have been thinking about this
subject--and the gaps between American and japanese recollections--lately. I
have learned a great deal from three Americanist colleauges, Edward Linenthal,
Michael Sherry and Lane Fenrich, who write specifically on this subject. In
general, there is very little discussion between twentieth century American
historians and Japan specialists on this subject. I would like to call your
attention to a special issue of the Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars on the
Smithsonian exhibit and memories of the end of the war generally, which I
organized. On the Japanese side, Sodei Rinjiro, Yui Daizaburo, Kurihara Sadako,
Ellen Hammond also contributed. It is just out--27.2--Summer 1995 and inquiries
should go to doub[atx]csf.colorado.edu.
